Richard Tsai

Clinician and researcher in neurodegenerative disease

About me

Dr. Richard Tsai is a behavioral neurologist, a specialist in nervous system disorders that affect cognitive functions such as memory, learning, perception and problem solving. He works with a multidisciplinary team to diagnose and treat patients with memory issues or dementia syndromes.

Tsai's research focuses on treatments, biomarkers and clinical trial methodology for neurodegenerative diseases. He is an investigator on many neurodegenerative clinical trials to identify disease modifying treatments for dementia. He is also interested in developing structural and molecular brain imaging techniques to improve the diagnosis and measurement of neurodegenerative disease.

A member of the outreach team for the UCSF Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, Tsai has a special interest in differences in the symptoms and disease processes of memory disorders in Chinese Americans in comparison to white Americans of European origin. Tsai is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and in addition to his patients at the UCSF Memory and Aging Center, Tsai sees patients at the nonprofit Chinese Hospital and Chinatown Public Health Center.

Tsai earned his bachelor's degree in molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley, followed by a joint medical degree and master's degree in business administration at Drexel University. He completed a neurology residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a fellowship in behavioral neurology at UCSF.
