

Sherri Shafer

Diabetes educator, author and outdoor enthusiast
Sherri Shafer is a registered dietitian and a certified diabetes educator. Since 1992, she has counseled thousands of people with diabetes at UCSF. She also works as an instructor for diabetes self-management workshops through the UCSF Diabetes Teaching Center, and she provides nutrition counseling for women who develop diabetes during pregnancy.
Shafer received her degree in nutrition and dietetics from the University of California, Berkeley.
Sharing her expertise on diabetes, Shafer has lectured extensively to medical professionals and public audiences, contributed to health care websites and professional publications, and developed educational materials. She is the author of two books, Diabetes and Carb Counting for Dummies and Diabetes Type 2: Complete Food Management Program.
In 2016, Shafer received the individual PRIDE Award for demonstrating the importance of professionalism, respect, integrity, diversity and excellence in her career at UCSF.
