Richard L. Abbott, MD


Dr. Richard Abbott is an internationally renowned ophthalmologist who treats patients with corneal and external diseases of the eye. His research and teaching address clinical practice guidelines, development of cognitive knowledge modules and ethics regarding eye care and eye surgery. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and is chair of the AAO Task Force for LASIK Quality of Life Outcomes. He is the principal investigator of the proposed Food and Drug Administration (FDA) study researching LASIK patient outcomes. Abbott also serves as the chair of the International Council of Ophthalmology’s Guidelines Development Committee to create evidence-based international guidelines for eye care.

Abbott received the AAO Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 and the Golden International Service Award from the Chinese Academy of Ophthalmology in 2007. In 1995, he received the Distinguished Lecturer Scholarship from the Ministry of Health in Singapore. He has authored or co-authored more than 80 publications and 32 book chapters and has delivered more than 500 invited lectures and 17 named lectures. He is a health science clinical professor of ophthalmology and holds the Thomas W. Boyden Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology at UCSF.
