Cancer Support Groups

Support groups held by the UCSF Ida and Joseph Friend Cancer Resource Center are free and available to all patients, whether or not you get your health care at UCSF.

General Cancer — All Stages

The general cancer group is a free, ongoing, weekly group open to patients with cancer of all stages and types. Please call for more information and to register.

General Cancer — Family and Friends

A support group for all who offer emotional and practical support to a loved one with cancer. Learn tools to cope with the emotional and physical aspects of caring for a loved one, and find ways of nurturing yourself.

General Cancer — Husbands and Significant Others

A group for men whose wives or partners are dealing with cancer. The group explores positive ways of dealing with cancer, provides mutual emotional support and shares information about treatments, side effects, complementary therapies, financial and insurance issues.

Breast Cancer Support Group

A support group for those diagnosed with breast cancer and in beginning or middle stages of treatment.

Advanced Breast Cancer Support Group

A support group for patients diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer.

Meetings: First and third Tuesday of the month. Call for times and location.

Bladder Cancer Education and Support Group

A group for patients with bladder cancer, their caregivers and family members to share their experiences, educate and support each other.

Blood Cancer Support Group (Leukemia, Lymphoma and Multiple Myeloma)

This is an informal educational and support group for hematology and bone marrow transplant patients. Family members are welcome to attend.

Brain Tumor Support Group

A group for patients, family members and caregivers to share their experiences and concerns, and to learn from each other.

Brain Tumor Caregiver Support Group

An emotional support group that is facilitated by our neuro-oncology social worker. Open to caregivers of UCSF neuro-oncology patients only. Registration is required. Visit our Neuro-Oncology Caregiver Program to learn more about our support services for caregivers.

Colorectal Cancer Support Group

People living with various types of colorectal cancer meet to share their experiences, concerns and questions with one another.

Gynecological Cancer Support Group

A drop-in support group for women who are diagnosed with any gynecological cancer and at any stage of treatment.

A drop-in support group for people at any stage of treatment for head or neck cancer.

Meningioma Support Group

Discussions for patients, family members and caretakers are held about meningioma, a type of brain tumor. Discussions are led by Dr. Michael McDermott, a UCSF neurosurgeon and specialist in meningioma treatment.

Prostate Cancer Support Group for Gay Men

This is a group for gay men and their significant others. It is open to UCSF patients and to the community. It's a place for men and their partners exchange information, provide support to one another and improve symptom management.

Peer Support by Phone

The Peer Support Program offers cancer patients the opportunity to speak with cancer survivors or veteran patients who have "been there." This is a free, on-the-phone service. All cancer patients are welcome regardless of where their care is provided. Patients are matched with peer support volunteers according to criteria such as diagnosis, stage, age, gender or by preference of the person seeking support.
