Pain Management
The UCSF Pain Management Center at Mount Zion treats patients with complicated and chronic medical, surgical and neurological pain. The center, one of the few such centers in Northern California, averages about 800 patient visits a month. The center has a team of doctors and therapists with specialties in anesthesia, neurology, medical psychology and physical therapy.
The center in 2007 was one of six designated nationwide by the American Pain Society as a Clinical Center of Excellence in Pain Management. The program was recognized for outstanding clinical pain care offered to patients and efforts in creating pain management education programs for busy practitioners.
Services at the center include:
- Evaluation of complex pain problems
- Regional anesthesia, or nerve blockage
- Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
- Physical therapy
- Home exercise and activity guidance
- Medication assessment
- Individual and couples psychotherapy and psychoeducation
- Stress management and relaxation
Chronic pain is a multifaceted medical problem than affects all aspects of the patient's life. Our center is staffed by professionals from several disciplines to address the range of issues brought about by pain. Patient involvement and education are important components of our program.
The center offers specialty consultation and treatment for different types of pain, such as:
- Back pain
- Neuropathic, or nerve, pain
- Pain caused by cancer
- Musculoskeletal or rheumatologic pain
- Post-injury or surgical pain
At the center, each patient's case is reviewed by our team to determine the best combination of therapies for that individual. The Pain Management Center works closely with the UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Management and the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Before visiting the center, you will be asked to obtain a referral from your primary care doctor or specialist. Your health insurance company may require prior authorization or approval to ensure coverage for our services.
Clinical research trials are often conducted at the Pain Management Center. Current patients will be notified if they're eligible to take part in a study, but anyone with chronic pain should feel free to ask about ongoing research. You don't have to be a patient at the center to participate in a research trial.
