Helping children with end stage kidney disease return to normal life through kidney transplants is the goal of our Pediatric Kidney Transplant team. The Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program at UCSF Children's Hospital is one of the oldest and most experienced in the United States.
More than 500 transplants have been performed in children and teenagers since 1964. Over the past three years, more than 50 kidney transplants were performed in children and teenagers. As a leader in pediatric kidney transplantation, our one-year survival rate for both living-related and cadaver kidney transplant recipients is 94 percent, well above the national average.
Our program is a team effort that includes kidney specialists (nephrologists), transplant surgeons, urologists, anesthesiologists, dialysis specialists, nurses, social workers, family counselors, child life specialists and specialists in pharmacy and nutrition who all have training and experience in working with the unique needs of children. This approach provides comprehensive care that is credited with the success of our program.
