Being With Your Child

Parents and family members are encouraged to spend as much time as possible with their child, when hospitalized. Brothers and sisters of any age are welcome to visit. Parents, however, are responsible for their supervision. Please no visitors with colds, flu, fever or exposure to chickenpox within the past three weeks.

Sleeping space for overnight stays is provided in the hospital for one parent or family member over the age of 18. Showers are available for a parent's use. In the hospital, you will have access to a microwave oven and a refrigerator. To store food in the refrigerator, label the item with your child's name and the date. Food will be stored for three days from the date on the label. Similarly, breast milk can be stored in the freezer.

Lodging

Families of seriously ill young patients, age 18 and younger, who live more than 50 miles from the medical center, may be eligible for rooms at the Family House or Ronald McDonald House. For more information, please call the Pediatric Social Work department at (415) 353-2655.

  • Family House: Family House provides free, temporary housing for families with children diagnosed with cancer and other life-threatening illness.
  • Ronald McDonald House: Ronald McDonald House accommodates up to 20 families and provides private sleeping areas, communal dining and living space.

Although we don't have on-site housing, we do maintain listings of hotel and motel accommodations. For information about hotels, motels and short-term apartment rentals, please visit our campus Housing Office Web site. A number of guesthouses and motels are located close to the hospital.

Our Physician Referral Service also is available for assistance with lodging:
