Asian Heart and Vascular Center

The UCSF Asian Heart and Vascular Center was established in 2006 to serve the Asian community, the fastest-growing segment of the San Francisco population. Cardiovascular disease and stroke are the leading causes of death in Asian-American men and women, according to the American Heart Association. In San Francisco, Asian Americans make up about a third of the city's population. As the Asian population increases, so does the need for cardiovascular specialists who can understand, communicate and treat heart disease.

The UCSF Asian Heart and Vascular Center is a cardiovascular care hub for the Asian community — a place where primary care doctors and specialists can refer patients for treatment that is respectful of the cultural differences that distinguish the Asian population. Patients also can receive information and language-appropriate educational materials about heart disease and prevention. Additionally, the center participates in research to further understand the metabolic and genetic differences of the Asian community.

Languages Spoken

To improve communication between doctors and patients, the center has a staff that works with patients in their native dialect or language, including Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese.

Services

  • Top-quality heart and vascular care tailored to the Asian community and communicated in patients' preferred language
  • Access to state-of-the-art technology from the UCSF Heart and Vascular Center
  • Language-appropriate outpatient eduation for patients on heart disease -- what it is, what you can do if you suffer from it, and how to prevent it through lifestyle changes such as altering diet, smoking cessation and increasing physical activity
  • Provides opportunity to take part in research studies that will help future generations of Asian Americans
