Kidney stone prevention at UCSF Health
The UCSF Kidney Stone Prevention Clinic provides comprehensive, personalized care to patients with kidney stone disease. In addition to using the most effective treatments, our expert team focuses on preventing recurrence and supporting long-term kidney health.
Common and often painful, kidney stones affect nearly 1 in 10 people at some point in their lives. For many, stones are not an isolated event but a recurring issue that, if left untreated, can lead to kidney damage, infection or other problems.
The clinic brings together nephrologists (specialists in kidney disorders), urologists and registered dietitians who work collaboratively to identify the underlying causes of stone formation, which differ from patient to patient. Under our care, you will benefit from advanced diagnostic tools, including metabolic evaluations, 24-hour urine testing, genetic testing and imaging studies. Treatment plans are tailored to your specific needs and may include dietary guidance, medication, surgery and close monitoring. Prevention requires a deep understanding of each patient's unique risk factors.
We are proud to be recognized by the Oxalosis and Hyperoxaluria Foundation (OHF) as a center of excellence – one of only four such centers worldwide. This designation reflects our commitment to delivering the highest level of care and advancing the science of kidney stone prevention.
