Preparing for surgery at UCSF Health

Before a surgical procedure at UCSF Health, your doctor schedules an appointment for you at the Prepare Program. The Prepare Program team assesses your readiness for anesthesia and surgery and ensures you complete any necessary tests before your operation.

What to expect

During your Prepare Program appointment, you undergo a health evaluation to ensure it's safe to proceed with surgery. You also review the instructions for before and after your procedure.

Health evaluation

Your health evaluation may include:

  • Brief medical history and physical exam

  • Blood pressure, heart rate and other vital sign measurements

  • Additional tests, if necessary (such as a blood test, chest X-ray or electrocardiogram)

  • Pain management discussion, to review the type of anesthesia your surgical team will use and your pain control options for after surgery

Pre-surgical instructions

We provide instructions for:

  • Hospital admission

  • Check-in location

  • Food and drink restrictions before surgery

  • Medication management

Phone appointment option

You may be able to have your Prepare Program appointment by phone if you:

  • Are in good health and under 60 years old

  • Have visited the Prepare Program within the last three months and have not had any health changes
