Respiratory function testing at Mount Zion

Our specialists provide comprehensive lung function testing, including standard and specialized studies. We use lung function tests to evaluate individuals with a known or suspected lung disease or to assess lung function before and after surgery.

Standard pulmonary function tests

We offer standard lung function tests, such as:

  • Blood gas measurement. We collect a blood sample from an artery and measure the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in it.
  • Diffusing capacity. We test how well your lungs exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide.
  • Six-minute walk test. As you walk, we evaluate oxygen saturation in your bloodstream using a probe attached to your finger or ear.
  • Lung volume. You inhale a special gas mixture and then slowly exhale it so we can measure your lung volume.
  • Spirometry. We measure the amount and speed of air you inhale and exhale. (Your provider may also discuss home spirometry monitoring with you.)

Specialized respiratory function tests

We also offer specialized respiratory function tests, such as:

  • Maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures. We evaluate the strength of your respiratory muscles.
  • Maximal voluntary ventilation. We measure the amount of air you inhale and exhale in one minute.
  • Methacholine challenge. You perform a spirometry test before and after inhaling methacholine, a drug that causes narrowing of airways. If your lung function drops by 20% or more, you may have asthma.
