What is happening with Saint Francis, St. Mary’s, and their associated clinics?

Saint Francis Hospital, St. Mary's Medical Center, and their San Francisco clinics became part of the UCSF Health system on August 1, 2024. They are no longer part of Dignity Health or any Catholic ministry of care.

What does this mean for patients?

At this time, patients can continue to access services at the same locations and telephone numbers, using the same methods and digital health tools. UCSF plans to make immediate investments in both hospitals, including the emergency departments, to improve patients' experience. Bringing Saint Francis, St. Mary's, and the clinics into the health system also means more patients have access to UCSF Health's experts and specialized, innovative care.

Will my appointments change?

Your current appointments and providers will not change.

Will I need to change my insurance or my provider to keep receiving care?

No. You will continue to have access to the services and providers you have now, along with expanded access to UCSF Health's providers.

Will there be changes to billing or payment processes?

The names on your financial statements will not change. You can continue to use the same phone numbers and patient portal resources to view or pay your bills. UCSF Health will continue to honor all insurance arrangements presently available at the hospitals and their associated outpatient clinics (like the Sister Mary Philippa Health Center). Beginning October 1, the physicians providing primary and specialty care at the former Dignity Health Medical Foundation clinics at 2250 Hayes Street, 1 Shrader Street, 1199 Bush Street and 24 Willie Mays (the Ballpark Clinic) will join the UCSF Health Medical Foundation and there may be changes to insurance, billing and cost to patients. We will continue to provide more information to patients and we’re committed to ensuring patients have access to care regardless of their ability to pay.

How do I contact my providers and access health records?

At this time, you will continue to access care teams, services and records using the same methods, telephone numbers, and digital health tools you use today.

Are the hospitals and clinics changing their names?

Yes. The new names are UCSF Health Saint Francis Hospital, UCSF Health St. Mary's Hospital and UCSF Health Clinics.
