Andrew John, MD

Dr. Andrew John is a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation who cares for patients with neuromuscular and musculoskeletal conditions, including spasticity, joint pain, limb amputations, and chronic migraine. He has expertise in nerve conduction studies (tests that assess electrical signals moving along nerves), electromyography (tests of the electrical activity of the muscles), nonsurgical management of musculoskeletal conditions, and focal chemodenervation (using botulinum toxin – most commonly known as Botox – and other agents that block nerve signals). To guide procedures, he uses advanced techniques, such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation and electromyography. In particular, he is skilled in performing ultrasound-guided intra-articular injections (delivering pain-relieving drugs, such as steroids, directly into joints) and trigger point injections (delivering drugs to painfully stiff muscles). He seeks to ensure personalized and effective treatments for all of his patients.

With an overarching goal to advance rehabilitation medicine, his scholarship involves exploring unusual physical diagnoses and global expansion of education in the specialty. He has contributed to reports to guide updating management standards for musculoskeletal conditions, case reports documenting rare conditions, and editorials discussing unique perspectives within health care. His work also investigates the efficacy of various rehabilitation techniques and their impacts on patient outcomes, reflecting his commitment to using the latest treatments and improving care protocols. His international involvement includes developing the educational curriculum for Nepal's first physical medicine and rehabilitation training program.

He earned his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Atrium Health Carolinas Rehabilitation, where he served as administrative chief resident. He received several honors during his medical education, including the Harry and Hattie Steinmetz Scholarship at Indiana University, an intern of the year award from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, and an award recognizing his excellence as resident of the year at Carolinas Rehabilitation.
