About me
Dr. Armond M. Esmaili is an internist who specializes in caring for patients in preoperative, hospital and skilled nursing facility settings. As the founder of UCSF's neurosurgery preoperative medical optimization clinic, he cares for patients with complex medical issues before their neurological surgery. As director of quality and safety for neurological surgery, he leads and oversees initiatives to improve care for patients with neurosurgical disorders across four UCSF campuses and multiple affiliate hospitals. He also leads efforts to improve patient safety, hospital throughput and the patient experience across the UCSF system.
In prior roles at UCSF Health, Esmaili served as assistant medical director of the Goldman Medical Service, medical director of the hospital medicine unit-based leadership team and medical director of the Code CARE Team.
A native of Evergreen, Colorado, Esmaili earned his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he was a health justice scholar, a track focused on how doctors can help eliminate inequities in health care. He completed his residency in internal medicine at UCSF, with additional training in quality improvement and health policy. He then served as chief resident at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. He joined the UCSF faculty in 2019.
