About me
Dr. Brandon Holmes is a behavioral neurologist who cares for patients with dementia. He has a special focus on those with Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia.
Holmes studies Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia in his laboratory, with the goal of improving diagnostics and treatments for all neurodegenerative diseases. His research examines how microglia – specialized brain cells that act as the immune regulators of the nervous system – contribute to Alzheimer's disease. His lab uses proteomics (the study of proteins' structure and function), protein engineering, cell culture models and animal models to better understand how microglia may accelerate Alzheimer's and to devise new therapies that can interrupt this disease process.
Holmes earned his medical degree and a doctorate in neuroscience from Washington University in St. Louis. At UCSF, he completed a residency in neurology and a fellowship in behavioral neurology.
When he's not working, Holmes enjoys playing drums and spending time outdoors.
