About me

Dr. Carissa Chu is a surgeon specializing in urologic cancers with experience in open and minimally invasive techniques.

Chu's research focuses on bladder and prostate cancer, including mechanisms of drug resistance and biological variation across different stages of disease. She runs a translational research lab that studies tumor tissues with the aim of improving treatments and identifying biomarkers to personalize care.

Chu earned her medical degree at UCSF, where she also completed a residency in urologic surgery. She completed a fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Chu has earned multiple awards for her excellence in leadership, research and clinical care. These include the Peter T. Scardino Award for Leadership, a Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology and a Ferdinand C. Valentine Fellowship for Research in the Field of Urology from the New York Academy of Medicine. She is also the recipient of training grants from the National Institutes of Health.
