About me
Dr. Connor O'Brien is a cardiologist with expertise in echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart) and critical care medicine. He focuses on care for adults with severe cardiac dysfunction or systemic shock who need prompt treatment in intensive care. He also cares for patients during the transition from intensive care to outpatient cardiac care.
O’Brien's research generally revolves around the identification and treatment of severe cardiovascular dysfunction. He is particularly interested in studying molecular cargo produced by the human body, which can be repurposed as regenerative medicine therapeutics as well as serve as markers of disease severity in systemic shock. His research focuses on translating basic science discoveries to clinical applications that improve understanding of underlying disease processes and effective treatments.
O'Brien earned his medical degree at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed a residency in internal medicine and fellowships in cardiovascular medicine and critical care medicine at Stanford Medicine.
O'Brien has participated in several global health initiatives. He provided primary care in Guatemala to communities with limited access to medical care. He studied infectious disease in Amazonas, Brazil, with support from the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He also worked in Harare, Zimbabwe, providing patient care and supporting educational efforts in Parirenyatwa Hospital, as part of the Johnson & Johnson global health fellowship program.
O'Brien is a former rugby player and avid fan. He won a national championship in 2006 while playing with the Mission Rugby Football Club (RFC) and later joined the Super League with Old Blue RFC.
