About me

Dr. Erik Hansen is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in surgeries of the hip and knee, including reconstruction, replacement and revision (surgery to address problems with or caused by a previous implant). He has expertise in the direct anterior approach for hip joint replacement, a minimally invasive approach that has advantages such as faster postoperative healing and enhanced joint stability.

Hansen has been the William R. Murray, MD, Endowed Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery since 2019. In research, he focuses on diagnosing, treating and preventing infections around artificial joints.

Hansen earned his medical degree and completed an orthopedic surgery residency at UCSF. He served as a fellow in adult reconstructive surgery at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Hansen directs a database of total joint replacements as well as a database of postsurgical joint infections for the surgery.

Dr. Hansen listened closely to what I had to see about my two-year odyssey to finally see him. He asked questions about my history with the pain I am experiencing. Then he was very thorough in his explanation of the x-ray of my knee and what he recommended for treatment, which is a knee replacement surgery. He was also clear about what to expect post-surgery. And he spoke in layperson's terms so I was able to understand everything he said.
