About me

Dr. Karen Goodwin is a surgeon who specializes in breast diseases. Her focus is on breast conservation using oncoplastic techniques, which aim to remove cancer while preserving breast appearance and function. She performs these techniques – including hidden scar methods and nipple-sparing mastectomies – with colleagues in reconstructive surgery.

In research, Goodwin is interested in how to reduce risk in women found to be at high risk for breast cancer.

Goodwin earned her medical degree from Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine. After completing a general surgery residency at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, she completed a fellowship in breast surgical oncology at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Goodwin is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons.

Outside of work, Goodwin enjoys hiking with her family, yoga, tennis, cooking, wine tasting and travel.

I was there to 1) get results of a scan that I was very worried about, as I would believe anyone would have been, and 2) to meet Dr Goodwin for the first time and 3) discuss my surgical options, in order of my priorities. Dr. Goodwin took some time to get to the results, going through my history first, which worried both me and the friend I'd brought with me. Then she told me the results almost as an aside. This seemed pretty tone-deaf to me. Also, both doctor and assistant were kind of relentlessly and forcefully jolly, I'm sure as a way to combat the seriousness of what they deal with all day long. Even though I got good news, it was a bit much. I like people to just be real with me, kind and present as much as possible.

I felt I was heard and understood without much talking on my part. Dr Goodwin had done her homework in me!
