Dr. Michael J. Feldstein is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hip and knee reconstruction. His surgical expertise includes using minimally invasive techniques, which allow patients faster recoveries and deliver a more natural feel. He enjoys applying his training in engineering to fixing painful or failing total joint replacements and has extensive experience performing revision hip and knee surgeries. He has special interests in taking care of athletes and fellow health care providers and is sensitive to their specific needs. His goal for each patient is to maximize their chances of success while minimizing their risks.
In research, Feldstein uses his training in biomedical engineering and design to develop new drug delivery techniques and medical devices that will improve patient care. He is also interested in advancing the use of robotic surgery, computer-assisted surgical navigation and medical technology in orthopedics.
Feldstein earned his bachelor's degree in bioengineering from the University of California, Berkeley and a master's degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned his medical degree in health sciences and technology from a joint program of MIT and Harvard Medical School. He completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at UCSF, a fellowship in biodesign innovation at Stanford University, and a fellowship in hip and knee arthroplasty (joint replacement) at the Rothman Orthopaedic Specialty Hospital.
Feldstein grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. In medical school, he fell in love with orthopedics and specifically total joint replacement because of the potential of cutting-edge technologies to directly improve patients' quality of life, and he continues to enjoy staying current on orthopedic innovations. He previously worked at Kaiser Permanente, where he became the highest volume orthopedic surgeon in the region. He considers it an honor to be part of the team at UCSF, with its mission to provide the best orthopedic care to patients in San Francisco and beyond.
This provider works with UCSF through the UCSF Health Community Medical Group, a multispecialty group connecting doctors and practices throughout the Bay Area.
