Dr. Elisabeth Askin is a specialist in internal medicine who is particularly interested in managing chronic disease and the medications prescribed for them. Her favorite question to ask new patients is what brings them joy, which she believes should never get lost among questions about symptoms, habits and health history. She enjoys learning about hobbies, travels and other pleasures through these conversations.

Askin grew up in Texas, earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and then held a variety of jobs – including magazine intern, coffee shop barista and contraception researcher – before going to medical school. She earned her medical degree at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and completed a residency in internal medicine at UCSF. While in school, she co-wrote a reference book for medical professionals, students and patients called The Health Care Handbook: A Clear and Concise Guide to the United States Health Care System.

Askin belongs to the Society of General Internal Medicine.

When she isn't working, she enjoys spending time with her two children, reading novels and cycling.

Sad to see Dr. Askin go, but understand and encouraged to follow her endeavours. Not many places are like that.Made most of short time we had with a short list. Discussed follow up management care and transition. She's a great doc. Encouraging, tries to provide options, and get patients Involved In their own care. Hope my next doc is like that too.

First UCSF doctor to ask my viewpoint about how my care was being handled and addressed. Dr. Askin made it easy and clear that it was okay to say I was disappointed.
