About me

Dr. Hubert Kim is an orthopedic surgeon and director of the UCSF Cartilage Repair and Regeneration Center at the UCSF Orthopaedic Institute. He specializes in treating arthritis and cartilage injuries specifically located in the knee, hip, shoulder or ankle.

Since 2011, Kim has been the James O. Johnston Endowed Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery Education. His research investigates the mechanisms involved in cell death after joint cartilage injury and ways to limit this process. His lab also studies using connective-tissue stem cells for bone and cartilage repair as well as for repair of muscle and nerve injuries.

Kim earned his medical degree at the Stanford University School of Medicine, where he also earned a doctorate in cancer biology. He completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at UCSF before joining the faculty in 1998.
