About me
Dr. Jeff Barry is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in adult reconstruction for hip and knee arthritis. He cares for patients with all types of degenerative conditions of the hip and knee as well as patients with complications from prior joint replacement. Barry takes a comprehensive approach to the diagnosis and management of hip and knee pain, incorporating the latest advancements in pain management around the time of surgery; surgical reconstruction and recovery, including minimally invasive total hip replacement via the bikini incision modification of the direct anterior approach, partial knee replacement and complex revision joint replacement surgery. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
After growing up in San Jose and attending Bellarmine College Preparatory for high school, Barry graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering from Duke University. He earned his medical degree at UCSF, where he also completed a residency in orthopedic surgery. He completed a fellowship in orthopedic surgery at one of the premier adult reconstruction programs in the country, OrthoCarolina Hip and Knee Center.
In research, Barry is interested in managing care and risk assessment around the time of surgery, complex revision surgery and managing complications after total joint replacement. His current research includes studying how to best manage infected total joint replacements as well as the implementation of technology to improve outcomes and enhance the care experience for patients.
Barry is passionate about advancing education for the next generation of medical students, residents and fellows. He is the director of the Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Fellowship at UCSF, which was recently recognized as one of the inaugural recipients of formal fellowship accreditation by the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. He is also a co-director of the UCSF Arthroplasty for the Modern Surgeon: Hip, Knee and Health Innovation Technology, a continuing medical education course held annually in Sonoma. He regularly teaches and presents nationally to practicing surgeons on techniques and advances related to direct anterior hip replacement and complex revision total hip and knee replacement. He has received certifications from the Teach for UCSF Certificate Program in both general and clinical teaching.
During his time at UCSF, Barry has received numerous clinical and research accolades, including the Mauer Award for Orthopaedic Surgery Chief Resident of the Year, the Krevans Award for intern of the year, the Arthroplasty Service Teamwork Award for Outstanding Resident and the UCSF School of Medicine Dean’s Yearlong Fellowship. He was nominated and selected to the American Orthopaedic Association Emerging Leaders Program. He has been an honorable mention for the UCSF Health Exceptional Physician Award. His research has been recognized nationally with awards including the Hip Society's Sir John Charnley, CBE, FRS Award, the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation Research Symposium Presenter's Choice Award and the American Orthopaedic Association's Annual Leadership Meeting Best Poster Award.
