About me
Dr. Meghan Shan is an ophthalmologist who specializes in caring for patients with cataracts or glaucoma. She has expertise in laser and other minimally invasive procedures, implantation of drainage devices for glaucoma, and combined cataract and glaucoma surgeries.
In her research, Shan designs artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for diagnosing and managing glaucoma. She wants to learn whether automated image processing can be used to screen populations for glaucoma, which is a leading cause of blindness worldwide. By furthering the development of accurate and scalable AI screening tools, she aims to help prevent irreversible vision loss. She is a UCSF Chen Scholar and an inventor on multiple patents.
Shan earned her medical degree and doctorate through Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's joint degree program. She completed a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Southern California, followed by a fellowship in glaucoma care at UCSF.
Shan is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Glaucoma Society, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and Women in Ophthalmology. In her spare time, she enjoys vinegar tasting (yes – vinegar, not wine) and dressing up other people's pets.
