Dr. Shinohara is clearly an excellent doc, and I'm VERY pleased to have him handling my cancer issues! I would recommend including recovery times and restrictions for various post-treatment options (e.g., radiation, HIFU, prostatectomy)--though, had I asked those questions, he would've immediately answered them carefully. My thanks and appreciation to him!

Great experience with the doctor

He used the term HIFU without explaining it. He explained side effect, complications in a somewhat limited way.

During a recent video consultation with my urologist, Dr. Shinohara, we discussed the gradual increase in my PSA levels, which have now exceeded 5 ng/ml. We reviewed my history of active surveillance for an early-stage prostate tumor (T1c) and noted that it has remained stable under close medical supervision. Ten years ago, I underwent a successful transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) to treat advanced benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which effectively reduced my PSA from 7 ng/ml to approximately 2 ng/ml. This level remained stable for seven years, but three years ago, it began to rise gradually. It has now reached a peak PSA level of 5.4 ng/ml, but there is no clear explanation for this increase. We are particularly concerned about the recent MRI finding that indicates a new prostate lesion (PI-RADS 5), which seems to be linked to the rise in PSA levels. We hope that the upcoming biopsy will provide more clarity on this issue.I would also like to express my sincere gratitude for the exceptional care provided by Dr. Shinohara and his dedicated team; their support has been invaluable throughout my treatment journey.

My wife and I appreciate the excellence in care at UCSF. We always leave confident that we have the information needed to continue this walk through prostate cancer and the active observation protocol we've been on for nearly a decade. We always have have experience people that personally care about us as people. We are not tested as just another patient. Thank you.

I wish he would have provided more detailed information, rather then to tell me he would see me in one year, and that only 2 PSA tests would be needed, between now and our one year meeting.

Excellent doctor, care provider.

Dr. Shinohara presented the biopsy results clearly. I had a lot of questions about what the results implied for my treatment options. Dr. Shinohara answered many of them, but the session ended before I could ask them all. I understand that he has limited time, but it was unfortunate that he was 10 minutes late to our visit.

It was a lovely experience

I have had several biopsies with Dr. Shinohara. This was the most comfortable one and had almost no post-procedure bleeding.

I think the standard protocol relying on MRIs and biopsies is too aggressive for me any many others and that Doppler ultrasound was perfect for me and I hope it will become the norm. Thank you very much Dr Shinohara. You saved me from 14 biopsies and gave a clearer answer.

Dr. Shinohara provided an analysis that no other UCSF physician has provided in the past, allowing me to not continue taking medications. Plus provided a fresh take on my situation and offered a solution that had not been previously discussed.

Typical UCSF experience- top notch!

Send like the doctor was efficient at conducting the procedure and overall it went off pretty well. But there was no communication! No explanation about what he was going to do. Just brief statements about what action he was taking: injecting you now, you will feel a poke,... No discussion about the problem out the treatment!

Dr.Shinohara Hardly acknowledged me. He had a resident perform the procedure and she provided me with excellent care. She would receive a rating of 5 for all of the above. But not Dr.Shinohara. He should have made time to meet me, talk to me, and do the things his resident did.

This was my fifth mri & Biopsy. It was the smoothest in execution and in part due to my being "cancer free" it was the least stressful of them. In part it was due to prior experience with the failure of the PSA test as well as earlier experience with another urology practice that lacked the sensitivity and professional quality of Dr. Shinohara and his team. The latter were truly exceptional.
