Dr. Lowell Lo is a nephrologist (kidney disease specialist) who cares for patients with electrolyte and acid-base disorders (imbalances in mineral or acidity levels in the blood). He serves as practice chief for UCSF's in-clinic kidney service and as medical director of the dialysis center on the Mount Zion campus. He is committed to making high-quality kidney care accessible for all patients.
Lo is passionate about educating the next generation of nephrologists and strives to ensure that all doctors develop a strong foundation in kidney physiology to inform their care. He participated in the UCSF-Coro Faculty Leadership Collaborative and trained as a UCSF Learning Health System Coach to enhance the nephrology clinic's quality of care.
Lo earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, where he also completed a residency in internal medicine. At UCSF, he completed a fellowship in nephrology, followed by advanced training in clinical research as well as medical education through the Teaching Scholars Program.
A member of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), Lo was a finalist in the 2016 ASN Innovations in Kidney Education Contest. His dedication to medical education and quality improvement has been recognized through numerous honors, including the UCSF Innovations Funding in Education Award, Outstanding Electronic Consultation Award (recognizing his provision of high-quality guidance to other doctors on kidney issues), Henry J. Kaiser Award for Excellence in Teaching, recognition as a master clinician by the UCSF Department of Medicine, and UCSF Health Exceptional Physician Award.
