About me
Dr. Luciano C. Greig is an ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon who is dedicated to taking excellent care of his patients and their eyes. His areas of expertise include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions and other conditions affecting the retinas. He also specializes in the surgical repair of retinal detachments, epiretinal membranes and macular holes.
Greig's laboratory investigates how genetics influence the development of retinal neurons during development. Insights from this work inform new treatment strategies to restore vision by stimulating stem cells to generate new cells that are key to vision in the eyes of adults. He is also interested in developing genetic tools to facilitate early-stage research in the lab and new approaches to gene therapy.
Greig earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, where he also earned a doctorate in developmental and regenerative biology. He received magna cum laude honors for his doctoral thesis and the Sanger Award for Excellence in neuroscience research. He completed a residency in ophthalmology at Stanford Medicine, followed by a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. As a fellow, he was honored with the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Merit Award.
Originally from Argentina, Greig enjoys exploring Bay Area restaurants, running, listening to podcasts and spending time with his family.
