Dr. M. Anthony Pogrel is an oral and maxillofacial (jaw and face) surgeon. He specializes in head and neck conditions, temporomandibular joint surgery, orthognathic surgery (jaw correction) and surgical use of lasers.

Pogrel conducts research on new treatments for oral and maxillofacial conditions, including salivary gland tumors and problems with facial nerves.

Pogrel earned his doctor of dental surgery degree at the University of Liverpool in England and his medical degree at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland. He completed general surgery training in Great Britain, followed by oral and maxillofacial surgery training in Great Britain, the Netherlands and the United States.

Pogrel joined UCSF in 1983. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and American College of Surgeons.
