About me
Dr. Maren Shapiro is a reproductive endocrinologist and fertility specialist who cares for patients with a wide range of reproductive and hormonal issues, including conditions that cause infertility. Her expertise encompasses diagnosing and treating irregular periods, polycystic ovarian syndrome, recurrent pregnancy loss, primary ovarian insufficiency (when the ovaries prematurely stop producing eggs) and endometriosis. She also provides fertility preservation through egg and embryo freezing.
Subjects of Shapiro's research include lifestyle factors affecting fertility, such as exercise; patients' experiences during fertility treatments; and in vitro fertilization (IVF) for patients with endometriosis. With a special interest in health care communication, she strives to distill complex topics into language patients can understand. While in medical school, she completed a one-year media-focused fellowship with the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, working with the World Health Organization and NBC News. She has written numerous articles for websites, such as NBCNews.com and Today.com. Also deeply involved in medical education, she has earned many awards for her teaching and serves on the American Society for Reproductive Medicine's subcommittee on residency education.
Shapiro earned her medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital (affiliates of Harvard Medical School), followed by a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at UCSF.
