About me

Dr. Mark Xu is an orthopedic surgeon who cares for patients with spinal conditions and complex fractures of the arm, leg and pelvis. He provides comprehensive care for degenerative conditions of all parts of the spine (such as spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis and cervical myelopathy) as well as for disc herniations, spinal infections and spinal tumors. He performs revision and reconstructive spinal surgeries and has special expertise in minimally invasive and computer-assisted spinal procedures. His approach with each patient emphasizes individual goals and shared decision-making on treatment plans. He works with a team of specialists in other disciplines to explore all nonsurgical options, and when surgery is necessary, he rigorously selects the techniques that will ensure the best outcomes.

Xu's research focuses on improving outcomes for orthopedic surgery patients, including by comparing surgical fixation techniques through biomechanical studies. He has received numerous grants for his studies, including an AO Trauma North America fellowship, and has presented his research findings at national and international conferences, including the Global Spine Congress and meetings of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, Canadian Orthopaedic Association and Canadian Spine Society.

Xu earned his medical degree and completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Manitoba in his hometown of Winnipeg in Canada. He completed a fellowship in orthopedic trauma at Vancouver General Hospital and the University of British Columbia, followed by a combined fellowship in orthopedic surgery and spine neurosurgery at Toronto Western Hospital, an affiliate of the University of Toronto. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Additionally, he has successfully completed the AO Spine Global Spine Diploma Examination.
