About me

Dr. Nathaniel Fleming is a vascular neurologist who cares for patients with neurovascular conditions both in and out of the hospital. This includes patients with stroke, transient ischemic attack (when brain blood flow is interrupted) and blood vessel disorders such as carotid stenosis, atherosclerosis, aneurysms, vascular malformations and fibromuscular dysplasia. He is the medical director of the Stroke Care Centers at UCSF Health Hyde and Stanyan Hospitals.

Fleming emphasizes preventive care through long-term relationships with patients, including managing high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes to lower risk of stroke. He also cares for patients experiencing neurovascular complications from other conditions, such as cancer, heart disease and genetic disorders, coordinating closely with the rest of their specialist care team.

In his research, Fleming studies risk factors for strokes and ways to prevent them from happening in the first place. He's also interested in optimizing how the health care system cares for stroke patients, from the time they first contact medical services to their return home.

Fleming earned his medical degree and a master's degree in epidemiology and clinical research at Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in neurology and a fellowship in vascular neurology at UCSF.
