Dr. Peter Sayre specializes in adult bone marrow transplantation and other treatments for leukemia, multiple myeloma, lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease.

Sayre is a director of clinical research at UCSF. His research interests focus on allogeneic stem cell transplants (which use cells from a matching donor) and leukemia in older adults. His work on these subjects has been widely published in medical and other scientific journals.

Sayre earned an undergraduate degree in philosophy from Yale College, graduating magna cum laude. He earned his medical degree at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and he earned a doctorate in immunology at Harvard University. He completed a fellowship in hematology and oncology at UCSF before joining the faculty in 1996.

    I continue to be in remission. I have been with Dr. Sayre for over 17 years. I have grown accustomed to his ways. We have a very good relationship where I am comfortable discussing all health issues. He is responsive and helpful.

    Dr Sayre became thoroughly familiar with my medical history, medical issues, and my priorities for treatment; he formulated a treatment plan that has been adopted by my attending hematologist/oncologist team, who defer to him for progress analysis and adjustments to treatment.He is very approachable, patient in explaining the pertinent details of disease and treatment, inspires confidence, and is kind. Very comforting to me.

    Dr Sayre was thoroughly familiar with all aspects of my medical condition, obviously very knowledgeable and experienced, provided very convincing details that verified the information I had received from previous medical staff, briefed me on options and treatment details that I had not heard previously, was very kind, considerate and caring. He is a very impressive asset of UCSF medical expertise; I learned a great deal and felt very comfortable with what he said and advised, and gives me confidence that I am receiving exceptional care for my condition and goals.

    Dr. Sayer is an extraordinarily good listener and communicator-he's gifted at translating medical treatments into digestible outcomes, then listening to my concerns and helping me make decisions. He's positive and upbeat, which I find reassuring. What he doesn't know, he defers to those he respects and brings those approaches into his protocol to give me the absolute best possible outcome. I couldn't ask for a better thought partner to make important decisions about my care.
