About me

Dr. Pramita Kuruvilla is a palliative care doctor who cares for patients and families journeying through serious illness, working with them in the hospital as well as in outpatient settings. With compassion and empathy, she seeks to empower her patients to navigate their conditions, and she applies her extensive experience with critical illness to helping them plan for the inevitable unknowns of their journeys.

Kuruvilla has special interests in medical humanities (a field that integrates health science with history, arts, philosophy and other subjects that inform human life) and narrative medicine (which focuses on each patient's story and interpretation of their condition). She is also interested in clinical ethics, leadership cultivation and equitable global health.

Kuruvilla earned her medical degree at the Yale School of Medicine. She completed a residency in family medicine at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and a fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine at UCSF. She is a certified health care ethics consultant and has completed the America's Essential Hospitals Fellows Program, which focuses on strengthening leadership skills. Prior to joining the UCSF faculty, Kuruvilla worked as an intensive care doctor for 14 years.
