About me

Dr. Raga Ramachandran is a surgical pathologist, a specialist in analyzing biopsies and tissue samples taken during surgery in order to help make treatment decisions. She focuses on liver and gastrointestinal diseases, and works with teams of medical students, residents, fellows and pathology assistants.

Ramachandran participates in collaborative research in her role as the San Francisco site pathologist for the Hepatitis B Research Network, a consortium of hospitals with expertise in care for individuals with chronic infection with the hepatitis B virus. She also conducts education research that examines the impact of the UCSF Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators' endowed chair program – which supports teaching excellence – on former chair holders.

After earning a master's degree in biological sciences at Stanford University, Ramachandran earned a doctorate in cell and molecular biology at the University of Pennsylvania. She also earned her medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine as part of the Medical Scientist Training Program. She completed residencies in anatomic and clinical pathology and fellowships in surgical pathology and gastrointestinal and liver pathology at UCSF.

Ramachandran is a member of the Group for Research in Pathology Education and the Undergraduate Medical Educators Section of the Association of Pathology Chairs. Also a member of the previously mentioned UCSF Academy of Medical Educators, she serves as the endowed chair in pathology medical student education.
