About me
Dr. Rena Fox is an internal medicine specialist and an expert in hepatitis C, making her one of the few doctors in the country with this distinct combination of qualifications. She cares for patients with general health needs as well as those with viral hepatitis and liver disease. She teaches internal medicine residents as part of her primary care practice.
As a researcher, Fox studies liver diseases such as hepatitis C and fatty liver disease, and factors such as which populations tend to be affected. Contributing to large studies conducted across multiple centers, she also researches long-term outcomes for patients with liver disease, such as hepatocellular carcinoma (the most common type of liver cancer) and cirrhosis.
Fox earned her medical degree at the University of California, San Diego and completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Washington. She completed a UCSF fellowship in general internal medicine with a particular interest in hepatitis C, receiving training from UCSF hepatologists in viral hepatitis.
Fox is internationally recognized as an educator. She lectures around the country and has been working with the Department of Veterans Affairs for more than a decade, developing educational tools and national policies on hepatitis C. She also serves as medical editor of the VA's viral hepatitis and liver disease website.
Fox serves on the faculty of UCSF's Hepatitis C Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes), which remotely supports providers in underserved and rural areas by offering information and guidance on hepatitis C screening and care via telemedicine.
