Dr. Rishi R. Sekar is a urological surgeon who cares for patients with cancers of the urinary and reproductive systems, including prostate, bladder, kidney, testicular, adrenal, urethral and penile cancers. He is experienced in both open (traditional) and minimally invasive surgical techniques. To deliver the best possible care, he combines cutting-edge tools with a holistic approach that takes each patient's unique experiences into consideration.
Sekar's research focuses on improving cancer care delivery, with an emphasis on addressing disparities through a better understanding of the social determinants of health (economic and environmental factors that affect well-being). He also studies the evolving role that safety net hospitals – which largely serve patients who have either Medicaid or no insurance – play in providing cancer care to vulnerable populations.
Sekar earned his medical degree at Emory University. He completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Washington, followed by a fellowship in urological oncology at the University of Michigan. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in health services and policy research through the National Clinician Scholars Program.
