Rony A. François, MD, PhD

Dr. Rony A. François is a dermatologist and dermatopathologist (a specialist in diagnosing skin, hair or nail conditions by examining samples under a microscope). Based on the individual needs of each patient, he develops treatment plans that may include topical and oral medications, skin surgery on a specific area (such as to remove a growth), observation, or a combination of these techniques. He has advanced training in interpreting skin biopsies through microscopic analysis and is particularly interested in caring for patients affected by cancer – whether they had it in the past, are currently living with it, or are on a cancer prevention journey.

In his research, François investigates RAS, the most common kind of cancer-causing gene (oncogene), with the goal of understanding how RAS mutations lead to cancer and developing new ways to target RAS and other genes it works with – potentially curing these cancers. He is particularly interested in targeting gene mutations linked to melanoma as well as lung, colon and pancreatic cancers.

François earned his medical degree and completed a residency in dermatology at the University of Florida, where he also earned a doctorate in molecular and cell biology. At UCSF, he completed a fellowship in dermatopathology.

Outside of work, François enjoys learning about different cuisines, languages and cultures. An audiophile and auditory learner, he enjoys listening to music and singing karaoke.
