About me

Dr. Stefano A. Bini is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in care for arthritis and performing complex joint replacements. As the orthopedic surgery department's chief technology officer, he focuses on driving innovation that brings together medicine and advanced scientific processes.

Bini's research lab investigates techniques for repairing abductor tendon tears (injury to tissues connecting the hip muscles to the thigh bone). He founded and chairs the annual Digital Orthopaedics Conference San Francisco, a professional network that seeks to bridge the gap between orthopedic patient care and digital technologies. He hosts the group's podcast and webinars. After participating in the highly competitive California Health Care Foundation Health Care Leadership Program, he co-authored a book on how to effectively manage organizational change.

Active in several professional associations, Bini founded the Personalized Arthroplasty Society in 2020 with colleagues around the world. He has chaired multiple committees for the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has served as an associate editor of Arthroplasty Today, as an elite reviewer for the Journal of Arthroplasty, and as associate AI (artificial intelligence) editor for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. Over the past two decades, he has organized dozens of educational events and attended more than 100 national and international conferences. He has presented and published hundreds of scientific papers, books and book chapters on total joint replacement, with a focus on using large health databases to help define best practices in hip and knee replacement surgery.

Bini earned his medical degree at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at UCSF, followed by a fellowship in orthopedic oncology at the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute in Italy. He earned a second medical degree at the University of Florence.

Bini is the UCSF Maria Manetti Shrem Endowed Professor. He is committed to teaching – and learning from – residents and colleagues. Both UCSF and Kaiser Permanente have recognized his work in medical education with awards for excellence in teaching and program planning.

Before joining UCSF, Bini worked at Kaiser Permanente as a joint replacement surgeon. He also held multiple leadership positions, including chief of orthopedics at two Kaiser locations. He helped oversee all surgical operations across Kaiser Permanente Northern California, with a focus on improving quality, access and efficiency. For his work to establish a total joint replacement patient registry, he was honored with Kaiser's national James A. Vohs Award for Quality.

Outside of work, Bini is a pencil artist, avid cook, reasonable dancer and amateur photographer. He enjoys traveling, cycling, skiing, and working out at the gym. He and his wife live in the East Bay and their two children are going to college in Southern California. When his wife or kids are home, they have to put up with his efforts to learn guitar – despite a lack of musical talent.

Dr. Bini is one of the most qualified surgeons I have ever met. He took the time to answer my questions. His assistant in the room was given an opportunity to learn from the experience of our meeting. I highly recommend Dr. Bini as a surgeon but also as a kind and empathic human being.
