Dr. Steven W. Cheung is an otologist-neurotologist, a physician who treats patients with conditions affecting the ears, balance, skull base and other parts of the head and neck. His expertise includes treating eardrum perforation, cholesteatoma (a skin growth that can occur behind the eardrum), otosclerosis (a disorder of ear bones that causes hearing loss) and acoustic neuroma (a noncancerous tumor that presses on ear nerves involved in balance and hearing). He also performs surgeries to implant devices that treat various forms of hearing loss.

Cheung's current research focuses on how the brain learns and reorganizes in response to hearing loss and tinnitus. His goal is to develop innovative therapies for hearing restoration.

Cheung earned his medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a residency in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery at UCSF, where he also completed clinical and research fellowships in neurological ear disorders.
