Thomas W. Gaither, MD
Urology
About me
Dr. Thomas W. Gaither is a urologist who specializes in reconstructive surgery, sexual medicine and LGBTQ+ health. He is dedicated to providing affirming care for patients whose sexual and urinary concerns are often overlooked. Among his professional interests are upper and lower urinary tract reconstruction, including after previous pelvic surgery or radiation; genital reconstruction after gender affirmation; addressing sexual function concerns, such as erectile dysfunction, orgasmic dysfunction, prostate sensation, pelvic pain, and sexual rehabilitation after prostate cancer treatment or gender-affirmation surgery; anal sex-related concerns, such as pain, bleeding, fissures and hemorrhoids, overactive pelvic floor muscles, preparation and hygiene routines; and return-to-sex counseling. His perspective on health incorporates physical, social and psychological factors, and he works closely with colorectal surgeons, pelvic floor physical therapists and mental health providers to ensure patients receive comprehensive, coordinated care. On social media, he makes educational posts as "That Prostate Doctor."
In his research, Gaither designs and tests simple patient questionnaires related to sexual and urinary health. His strategy is to create tools that let people describe their symptoms and goals in their own words, and then assess whether the tools are accurate and useful. The goal is to help providers quickly understand what matters to each patient, recommend the appropriate treatments and track progress over time.
Gaither earned his medical degree at UCSF. At the University of California, Los Angeles, he completed a residency in urology as well as a fellowship in reconstructive urology and gender-affirming surgery.
Outside of work, Gaither enjoys playing chess; being an uncle; and staying fit through gymnastics, boxing, volleyball, skiing, running, swimming, yoga and Pilates.
