About me

Dr. Tyler S. Cole is a neurosurgeon who cares for patients with conditions of the brain and spine. He specializes in both open (traditional) and minimally invasive surgeries to treat epilepsy as well as conditions involving the skull base, spine and cerebrovascular system (blood vessels in the head and neck). He directs UCSF's cerebrovascular surgery and interventional and endovascular stroke services at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. He brings a data-driven, patient-centered approach to his practice.

Cole has been at the forefront of research and innovation in neurosurgery. He has pioneered advancements in microvascular surgery and postoperative recovery techniques, and has conducted extensive research on surgical outcomes using large-scale databases. He has received numerous honors for his work to improve patient care, including awards for best operative technique and best clinical research from the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. His research has been featured on covers of the Journal of Neurosurgery, and he has made presentations around the country. He has authored multiple surgical patents, more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, and numerous book chapters in leading neurosurgical textbooks. His extensive research experience coupled with his background in biomedical informatics allow him to provide personalized care based on the latest science.

Cole earned his medical degree at Stanford University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in neurosurgery at Barrow Neurological Institute, where he also completed fellowships in cerebrovascular and skull base surgery and endovascular neurosurgery. He completed a fellowship in epilepsy surgery at UC Irvine Health.
