Dr. Yvonne Ou is an ophthalmologist who specializes in treating glaucoma with medical, laser and surgical therapies. Her surgical expertise includes minimally invasive procedures, filtering surgery and drainage implant surgery. She also specializes in evaluating and treating cataracts, and she performs combined cataract and glaucoma surgery.

In research, Ou is particularly interested in understanding the degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (a kind of nerve cell) that occurs in glaucoma and how to restore vision by harnessing the eye's own ability to repair. She also designs new tests to improve glaucoma diagnosis and better monitor progression. She has received the Alcon Research Institute Young Investigator Grant and the BrightFocus Foundation's Dr. Douglas H. Johnson Award for glaucoma research.

Ou enjoys teaching and mentoring the next generation of ophthalmologists and vision scientists. She is co-director of UCSF's glaucoma division and vice chair for postgraduate education in the UCSF Department of Ophthalmology.

In her free time, Ou likes to explore the outdoors with her husband and two young children.

    I would recommend the doctor without reservation for her skills, experience and reputation. She's also incredibly open, approachable and communicative. However, I would warn the person I referred that it's incredibly difficult to get an appointment, you may end up feeling rushed when you have an appointment and you may have to wait a long time.

    Dr. Ou and the team members made me feel at ease. Answered the questions I had and gave me a printout of the information I needed to discuss with my family members. Dr. Ou took her time to answer my question along with the questions my son and friend had.

    It's my first visit but Dr Ou is very busy bustling from one patient you the next. I did not understand the convo between her and Dr Patel except to request for prior records to see the progression of my condition..I should have asked but fid not think about it then as my concern is the eye itchiness for 4 months going

    Dr. Ou was thorough. She spent a lot of time looking all over my eyes. She did use a lot of technical terminology but I do understand she was training/mentoring another Dr. Dr. Ou did speak rather fast but I was able to ask questions that I had. She explained my test results and what she would like for me to do before my next follow up appt.
