About me

Dr. Zhonghui Guan is a pain medicine physician and anesthesiologist. He has particular expertise in treating chronic pain, including low back pain, neck pain, neuropathic pain, complex regional pain syndrome, failed back surgery syndrome and cancer pain.

In his research, Guan focuses on better understanding the regulation of gene expression in chronic pain. Gene expression regulation is essentially cell processes that control synthesis of proteins or other products that play a role in body functions.

Guan earned his medical degree at Peking Union Medical College in Beijing. He completed an anesthesia residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by a pain management fellowship at UCSF.

Guan is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Society of Anesthesiologists, California Society of Anesthesiologists and Society for Neuroscience.

The provider seemed to listen well to my symptoms. I was surprised he did not perform a physical exam or palpate the area of pain, given that muscle tension could be a contributing factor. After listening and asking good questions, he made a treatment suggestion that is meant to address one contributing factor of the pain. That might turn out to be all the treatment that is needed, however, it would have been helpful if he had oriented me to the overall process of treatment - such as: Are there alternative options? If this doesn't work, what are next steps? Will the general pain symptoms also be addressed in time? What is the process for moving forward with ongoing treatment of chronic symptoms? I think some general orientation to the appointment and treatment process would be very helpful for patients.
