Why choose UCSF Health for gastroenterology care?

UCSF Health's gastroenterology team helps prevent, diagnose and treat disorders affecting all parts of your digestive tract.

We routinely care for patients with complex GI conditions, giving them the specialized care they need to feel their best.

Our team offers general GI care and specialty services for conditions such as gastrointestinal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). At UCSF Health, we offer access to the most advanced treatments and clinical trials.

Our award-winning team performs minimally invasive and complex procedures — including advanced abdominal surgeries and colorectal surgery.

We specialize in minimally invasive endoscopy procedures. Our interventional endoscopists use a small, flexible tube (endoscope) to perform general and advanced abdominal procedures.

Our gastroenterology services

Digestive tract conditions often affect multiple organs since the digestive system is interconnected. Our holistic approach to GI care gives you access to multiple UCSF Health specialists, including:

  • Gastroenterologists

  • Gastrointestinal surgeons

  • Oncologists

  • Radiologists

  • Pathologists

  • Immunologists

  • Nutritionists

  • Psychologists

We create personalized care plans that prevent and treat symptoms of GI conditions. You can access clinical trials and promising treatments that are not widely available yet.

Preventive GI care

  • Screenings and diagnostics. We use endoscopies, colonoscopies and intestinal ultrasounds to detect signs of gastrointestinal conditions early on when they are easier to treat.

  • High-risk care. If you are at high risk for digestive tract disorders and liver disease, you may need screenings more frequently and earlier in life. Our preventive approach to care helps you stay healthy, catching diseases early so we can treat them more successfully.

Specialized GI care

  • Colitis and Crohn's disease care. At our Colitis and Crohn's Disease Center, we offer comprehensive IBD care, including specialized care for pregnant people, older adults and those with cancer or primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). UCSF Health was one of the first places in the country offering intestinal ultrasound for monitoring IBD. You can access innovative IBD therapies through one of our clinical trials.

  • Liver care. Our team cares for patients with complex liver conditions, such as liver tumors, alcohol-associated liver disease and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD, previously known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). Experts in our Liver Transplant Program help you stay well before and after transplant.

  • Pancreas care. Specialists at our Pancreas Care provide innovative treatments for pancreatic disorders, including noncancerous tumors and pancreatic cancer.

Advanced endoscopy procedures

Often, you can have an endoscopy procedure instead of a traditional surgery. These minimally invasive procedures offer precise, efficient care with a lower risk of complications and a shorter recovery.

Our experienced interventional endoscopists perform these procedures, including:

  • Balloon enteroscopy

  • Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)

  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

  • Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG)

  • Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD)

  • Endoscopic ultrasound

  • Per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM)

GI surgery

Our experienced gastrointestinal surgeons use leading technology, including laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgery, to diagnose and treat GI conditions. These minimally invasive approaches often lead to less pain and a quicker recovery.

Our experience enables us to care for patients with multiple, complex conditions. We develop a personalized surgical plan to provide you with the best outcome possible. Our areas of expertise include:

Whole-person care

We treat the whole person, not just the condition. Our approach to care includes services to support your mental and emotional health:

  • Mental health services

  • Physical therapy

  • Nutrition counseling

Our team helps you achieve your health goals and feel your best.
