Laser Vision Correction

On this page

Using the latest techniques and instruments, the UCSF Laser Vision Center offers state-of-the-art vision correction surgery, including the most common type, laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Our expertise includes topography-guided LASIK, which is more precise than traditional LASIK and customized to your eye's unique surface shape, as well as all-laser LASIK, an approach that eliminates the need for a surgical blade. We also perform photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), a type of vision correction surgery that uses lasers to reshape the cornea and provides a better option than LASIK for some patients.

Our center's LASIK surgeons are board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologists. Nationally recognized leaders in the field, UCSF eye surgeons were among the first in the United States to perform PRK and LASIK in clinical trials sponsored by the Food and Drug Administration. Since then, we have safely and successfully treated thousands of patients, enabling them to reduce or eliminate their need for glasses or contact lenses.

Our threefold mission is to provide the best possible surgical care, to advance the field of refractive surgery through research, and to educate our patients about surgical and nonsurgical vision correction options.

Our consultations include a comprehensive eye exam, corneal mapping (a painless imaging technique that reveals features of your cornea, such as shape and thickness), and a personalized, in-depth evaluation by one of our surgeons.
