Our ophthalmology and optometry services

Our unique blend of eye services means you don't have to travel far for world-class care. At UCSF Health, you can find:

  • Vision exams. We perform comprehensive vision exams to check your eye health and vision. Our team also tests for glaucoma and cataracts.

  • Optometry services. We offer eye exams, corrective eyeglasses, contact lenses, protective eyewear and the top eyewear designer brands for the entire family.

Our eye health experts provide specialty care for more complex eye concerns:

  • Care for corneal disease. We are one of only a few programs in the western U.S. to offer prosthetic replacement of the ocular surface ecosystem (PROSE) for people with complex corneal disease.

  • Cataract surgery. This procedure replaces the cloudy natural eye lens with a clear, artificial lens to help you see more clearly.

  • Lens surgery. During refractive lens exchange (RLE), we replace your natural lens with an artificial one to correct vision problems, such as nearsightedness.

  • Eye movement disorders treatment. We offer surgical and nonsurgical treatments for strabismus (abnormal eye alignment) and nystagmus (uncontrolled eye movements).

  • Glaucoma surgery. We care for people with all types of glaucoma, including advanced glaucoma, and those who had unsuccessful glaucoma surgery.

  • Laser eye surgery. Our eye surgeons use the latest minimally invasive techniques to reshape your cornea for improved vision, including bladeless LASIK and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).

  • Eye tumor treatment. We are one of the only programs on the West Coast offering proton beam radiotherapy for intraocular melanomas (cancer inside the eye).

  • Oculofacial plastic and orbital surgery. Our surgeons offer cosmetic and reconstructive procedures for droopy lids, eyelid disorders, blocked tear ducts and thyroid eye disease.

    • The Parasitic Ulcer Treatment Trial (PUTT) is a multi-center, parallel-group, randomized clinical trial. The purpose of this study is to determine whether including topical corticosteroids in a regimen for acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) will improve vision. Patients presenting to all enrollment centers with evidence of acanthamoeba keratitis will be eligible for the trial if there is evidence of ocular inflammation after 4 weeks of anti-amoebic therapy. Those who agree to participate will be randomized to one of two treatment groups: Group 1: Topical corticosteroid Group 2: Topical placebo
    • The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if adjunctive topical Cyclosporine A eye drops combined with standard of care topical Natamycin treatment improves vision outcomes in patients with fungal keratitis.
    • Dry eye disease is a common problem that can make your eyes feel uncomfortable and affect your vision, making daily tasks harder. Many past studies on dry eye treatments haven't worked well because they didn't include enough people or different types of people. Doing studies at home instead of at the doctor's office can help more people join and make it easier to find out which treatments really work.
