National osseointegration pioneers
UCSF Health was the first program to offer osseointegration in the United States, an innovative surgery that attaches a prosthetic device directly to a person's bone. As a leader in this innovative procedure, we offer an exceptional level of experience and expertise.
After surgery, your bone grows around the prosthetic device, helping to strengthen and stabilize it. Compared to traditional artificial limbs, osseointegration gives you:
Improved comfort and fit
Easier movement and function
Less skin irritation
Microprocessor technology
We offer microprocessor technology for both upper and lower extremity devices, including for hands, knees and ankles. Microprocessor orthotics and prosthetics have built-in computers that sense movement and terrain in real-time. The advanced software in the device supports:
Enhanced movement and control
Reduced falls
Less energy expenditure
Active members of national and international associations
We are members of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (AAOP), the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association (AOPA), the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) and the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE). Our membership in these associations allows us to continually expand our skill set and lead initiatives to enhance patient care at UCSF Health and nationwide.
