Why choose UCSF Health for physical rehabilitation?

Whether you're dealing with chronic pain or recovering from an injury, illness or surgery, you need an experienced team by your side. Our rehabilitation specialists work with patients and caregivers to set goals and help you regain function so you can live as independently as possible.

Our physical therapy and rehabilitation services

At UCSF Health, rehabilitation experts collaborate with your referring provider to deliver care that's tailored to your needs. They draw on a wide range of physical, occupational and speech therapy services to help you reach your health goals. We offer in-person care at locations across the Bay Area, as well as virtual care for added convenience.

Our core services include:

  • Physical therapy. Physical therapists use evidence-based treatments to enhance strength, flexibility and range of motion for improved mobility.

  • Occupational therapy. Occupational therapists help patients regain everyday skills so they can live as independently and safely as possible.

  • Speech-language pathology. Speech-language pathologists help people with speech, language and cognitive challenges improve their ability to function and communicate. Learn more about the UCSF Speech-Language Pathology program.

We also offer specialized physical therapy services such as:

Women's health and pelvic rehabilitation

Physical therapists at the UCSF Center for Urogynecology and Women's Pelvic Health treat incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, overactive bladder, pelvic pain and postpartum (after childbirth) complications. We also care for women and men experiencing pelvic dysfunction following cancer treatment, such as gynecologic surgery or radiation therapy for prostate cancer.

Our therapists use leading-edge technology, such as real-time ultrasound assessments and biofeedback to evaluate pelvic floor function. These tools allow us to assess sensitive areas without a manual exam and help patients retrain their pelvic floor muscles more effectively.

Neurologic physical therapy

We offer physical, occupational and speech services for people with Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, brain injuries, spinal injuries, spasticity and other types of movement disorders.

Our therapists also offer PT and OT wheelchair assessments with vendor coordination, particularly for our patients with ALS who require seating and positioning support.

Orthopedic and spine physical therapy

Our therapists treat people with persistent back or neck pain related to musculoskeletal conditions such as sciatica, scoliosis, arthritis and overuse injuries. We also support patients recovering from spine surgery, joint replacement and other orthopedic procedures.

Our providers work closely with the UCSF Orthotics and Prosthetics program to help people with lower limb amputation adapt to prostheses and regain mobility.

Sports physical therapy

Our physical therapists rehabilitate the full range of musculoskeletal injuries using the latest treatment guidelines. They help athletes and people of all activity levels get back to their sport safely and with less pain.

Our therapists have experience in myofascial decompression and blood flow restriction therapy, two research-backed treatments that should only be performed by trained professionals.

Oncology rehabilitation

We help people who have physical and cognitive challenges related to cancer or cancer treatments, such as surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Our therapists address pain, fatigue, nerve damage, deconditioning, muscle and joint issues, incontinence and lymphedema.

We support patients as they rebuild endurance and strength, both during cancer treatment and throughout survivorship.
