UCSF Health emergency care

Emergency Room (ER) Wait Times

See the current estimated wait times* for UCSF Health's Emergency Departments below.

These estimates show approximately how long it may take from your arrival at the emergency department until you are first seen by a treating provider – not including time spent in triage. The estimate also does not reflect the total length of your visit, which may include evaluation, testing, treatment, and either admission to the hospital or discharge home.

Emergency care is provided based on each patient's medical needs, not arrival order.

Do you need emergency care or urgent care?

Emergency care is for life-threatening or severe issues that need immediate attention. Urgent care is for an illness or injury that needs prompt attention but isn't life-threatening or severe – the kind of thing you'd normally see your own doctor for, but it can't wait.

Choosing an emergency department location

Our Emergency Departments are staffed and equipped for different patient needs:

  • All patients: Parnassus, Hyde and Stanyan EDs (primarily care for adults but can also take care of children)
  • Pediatric patients: Mission Bay and Oakland EDs

If your condition is not life-threatening and it is safe to choose among locations, this information can help you understand which UCSF Health Emergency Department is designed for your needs. Wait times are updated every 15 minutes.

* About these wait times

Each wait time shown is an estimate and may be shorter or longer than your actual wait. Wait times can change quickly based on the number of patients arriving and the severity of their conditions. Patients with life-threatening illnesses or injuries are treated first, regardless of when they arrive.

The wait times shown are estimates for general information only. They are not appointment times, reservations or guarantees.
