About me

Dr. Adrian Whelan is a nephrologist who specializes in caring for patients during kidney transplantation. He evaluates patients prior to their surgery, cares for them in the hospital before and after the transplant, and provides follow-up care to support healthy integration of the new organ. Dedicated to helping train the next generation of transplant nephrologists, he directs UCSF's fellowship program in kidney transplantation.

Whelan's research focuses on identifying factors that prevent patients from accessing kidney transplants, with the goal of removing barriers for those who need care.

Whelan earned his medical degree at University College Cork, part of the National University of Ireland, and completed a residency in internal medicine and specialist training in nephrology at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. At UCSF, he completed two fellowships, one in general nephrology and one in transplant nephrology. He also earned a master of advanced studies degree in clinical research from UCSF.
